Overview

About this service

A fetal anomaly scan (also called a level 2 or targeted anomaly scan) is a detailed ultrasound examination that checks the baby's anatomy - brain, heart, spine, kidneys, limbs, and other structures - for visible structural abnormalities. It is more detailed than a routine dating or growth scan and is a standard, recommended part of antenatal care for most pregnancies, not only high-risk ones.

Key insights about this service

01

When it is performed

The anomaly scan is typically done between roughly 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy - early enough that findings can still guide further evaluation and decision-making, and late enough that fetal structures are developed enough to assess clearly.

02

What it assesses

The scan checks fetal growth and measurements, the amount of amniotic fluid, placental position, and the structure of major organ systems, and screens for physical markers that can be associated with chromosomal or genetic conditions.

03

3D/4D ultrasound

Shraddha Women's Hospital's Voluson S8 system includes dedicated 3D and 4D imaging capability. Where clinically useful, this provides additional structural detail beyond standard 2D imaging - Dr. Mody completed hands-on training specifically in 3D-4D ultrasound at Dr. Nagori's Institute for Infertility & IVF, Ahmedabad (FOGSI-recognised, September 2019).

04

What happens next if something is found

Most anomaly scans are reassuring. If a finding needs a closer look, the next step is usually a more detailed, targeted scan and, where relevant, a fetal medicine consultation to interpret it in context.

05

Equipment used

Voluson S8 ultrasound system with four probes - convex, 3D, linear, and transvaginal (TVS).
