Key insights about this service

01

When to seek an infertility evaluation

Generally, couples are advised to seek evaluation after 12 months of trying to conceive without success (or 6 months if the woman is over 35), or sooner if there's a known reason to suspect a fertility issue - irregular or absent periods, a history of pelvic infection or surgery, or a known condition such as PCOS or endometriosis.

02

What an initial evaluation involves

A detailed history from both partners, a physical and pelvic examination, ultrasound assessment of the uterus and ovaries, hormonal blood tests to assess ovarian reserve and function, and - where relevant - assessment of the male partner. The goal at this stage is to identify a likely cause, or narrow down the possibilities, before deciding on a treatment approach.

03

What reproductive endocrinology covers

Reproductive endocrinology is the study and management of hormonal conditions that affect fertility and the menstrual cycle - conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), thyroid disorders affecting fertility, and ovulation disorders. Correcting or managing an underlying hormonal cause is often the first step before considering more involved fertility treatment.

04

Treatment approaches, depending on findings

  • Lifestyle and medical management of underlying hormonal conditions
  • Ovulation induction, where ovulation is irregular or absent
  • Further diagnostic evaluation (e.g. checking whether the fallopian tubes are open)
  • Referral for assisted reproduction (IUI/IVF) where indicated - arranged in coordination with the patient
